Sopan Vidyalaya

Presently, "Sopan Vidyalaya" is catering the needs of 40 students most of whom come from labour class families. For these families, it is difficult to send their children to private schools because of the fee structure and they find no use of sending the students to the other so called free-education schools, where neither education nor culture is imparted.

They are charged Rs. 10/- per month, essentially to keep their sense of participation and self pride.

The course content of the school is designed to meet the local requirements and at the same time converges at class 5, with the UP board syllabus.

Teachers and students of sopan vidyalaya make a family and the focus is always on learning with overall development of human qualities, such as social concerns, care for nature and mankind, love and respect for all religions, patriotism and national pride.

The school has started Nutrition programme under which some nutritious breakfast is given to all students. The management for preparing and distributing the items is largely done by students themselves. They also participate in other management activities.

The school is running in a small rental house. Due to increase in activities, it has become essential to have a larger place.

Though the school timing is generally for 5 hours in the morning, teachers and students are seen in the school almost every hour of the day. Informal activities such as games, music, story telling, etc., keep on going. During vacations, special classes are held to develop the professional skills as well as the personality.

We have so far conducted classes for tailoring, embroidery, candle making, register binding, painting etc. It is heartening to note that students of age 10 to 12 years produced beautiful hand bags which are being used by many of us during travel.

Evening Centers

One shiksha sopan evening center is running at the Student Activity Center (SAC) inside IIT Kanpur for two hours in the evening. Here we have mostly the students from servant quarters, and from Nankari. Around 40 to 60 students come to the center everyday. The other two centers are run at Barasirohi village and Chak Ratanpur village. Altogether we are in regular contact with about 200 village students at the three evening centers.

These centers are seving as platforms for young children and conducting various social activities. Shiksha Sopan volunteers include IIT Kanpur students and local youth; they go regularly to these centers to conduct classes and activities. These volunteers give their regularly in teaching the students through easy to understand examples and techniques and also interact with the students solving their educational problems, and inspiring them to their caliber.

About one and half hour is spent on solving students' educational problems, especially in Science, Mathematics and English, and the remaining half-an-hour is used to inculcate Sanskar aspect. This includes inspiring stories, songs, knowledge about our culture and heritage.
